the longest summer

Do you remember that day?
Because I see you with every ounce of my soul.
Our bare feet dancing amongst thick blades of grass, coarse and hard,
our toes sinking into the soil.
Dirt smushed underneath our arches,
puddles formed with every drop of rain that fell from that sky,
blue as the ocean just across the way.

Blue as the sheets on that bed that opened me whole.

We splashed through each one as we ran around to the front of the house.

Screaming and laughing, giggling as though we had just stolen a candy bar from the local corner store,

giggling as if there wasn’t a whole world waiting to tear us apart.

So as we stood there rain dripping down our backs, shirts soaked through, I saw the emerald in your eyes and forgot the cold that shivered up my spine. Forgot the world that was waiting just outside.

And existed.

In each other. With each other.
